Does changing a japense word written horizontally to vertical change the meaning of the word in Japenese?

On Google translator the word for sober in japenese is 地味な.

but when i changed the charcater's going vertically the translation had a different meaning?Does changing a japense word written horizontally to vertical change the meaning of the word in Japenese?
Because google translate isn't a native speaker. It's a machine that collects the words of the languages it translate and when you want to translate something it tries to match the words up with the other language but it barely pays abstention to the grammar order. That's why Google Translate is always wrong when translating a sentence the only thing it can translate correctly is words separately. Now to answer your Japanese question the way it's written doesn't change the definition.

For example :

こんにちは、純一郎さん。 Hello Junichirou
