Why do we Americans [and other English-speakers] use the German word "kindergarten"?
I was just reading an article with the word "kindergarten" in it and realized that the word looked very german. so I typed it into a translator, and sure enough, it means the same "nursery school" in german. Why do english speakers use their german word? did germans bring it over here, or did it somehow arrive in the english language the same as the original word?|||English borrows lots of words from other languages. It is a Germanic language, so it should be no particular surprised that it uses plenty of German or German-based words. We also use tons of French words. It's just part of the way the language evolved over time; we've never sought to keep our language "pure," as some nations do, and as a result, it's a language with an enormous vocabulary and with the ability to express a massive number of ideas.
